Walk-In Showers

Walk-In Showers

walk-in showersDesign was the last thing on the minds of those who built the walk-in showers of yesteryear. The utilitarian shower stall was cramped, claustrophobic, and dark. The typical tile walk in shower included a basic shower faucet and a soap shelf with little or no space for shampoo or conditioners. The shower was a place to get in, get clean, and get out. Period.

Fortunately, walk-in shower design has come a long way. Modern showers are open, bright, and full of convenient features. Good shower design considers space, comfort, flexibility, safety, and convenience. A shower should be an oasis with a spa-like feel that calms and relaxes.

Walk-in Shower Design

A redesign of an older walk-in shower can be accomplished in the same space as the existing shower. Removing walls is an easy way to redesign an older shower. Replacing a wall with a glass panel will increase the size visually.

Some bathrooms have unused space that can be captured to increase the size of the shower. The size of the shower can often be increased without any structural work using creative design.

Many customers redesign their master bath by replacing the tub with a large walk in shower. The old shower can be replaced with a closet for additional storage.

Walk-in Shower Access

A critical part of a shower design is accessibility. ReBath offers several threshold options to make a shower more accessible. A standard threshold (also known as a shower curb) is six inches tall, a low threshold is three inches tall, and a barrier-free threshold is almost flush with the floor, which allows a wheelchair to wheel into the shower base. A small vinyl strip keeps the water out or in the shower while allowing the wheel chair to enter the base.

Walk-in Shower Safety

A shower should be designed so that it is safe for all ages. At least two grab bars or safety bars should be installed to assist entering the shower and rising from a shower seat. Grab bars are available in many designer finishes so your shower won’t look institutional. All grab bars must be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.

Shower Valves

walk-in shower valvesInstead of a basic valve and showerhead, you can choose from a variety of valves, showerheads, handheld showers, and body sprays.

Either a pressure balance valve or a thermostatic control valve on the showerhead is a must. Pressure balance valves maintain a constant temperature regardless of changes in hot and cold water supply. A thermostatic valve has a control that keeps the temperature consistent and prevents scalding. Thermostatic valves work well if you have several showers operating at the same time. Lever control handles provide ease of use for all ages.

walk-in shower headsDesign your new walk in shower with the latest showerhead. Today’s showerheads offer a variety of water patterns and pressures —all while saving water. New technology mixes air with water to give you the feel of more water. You can choose from a soft rain pattern to an invigorating massage pattern. Many showerheads can be adjusted to spray several different shower patterns, which works well if you have users with opposite preferences. Enjoy the feel of warm water caressing your body with the perfect water pattern.

Walk-in Shower Seat Options

Seats give a walk-in shower a place to relax or to shave legs. A comfortable seat and a handheld showerhead offer the ultimate relaxed shower. Seats style Seat style options are corner, bench, floating, and folding (for tighter showers). These seats can be installed at a height that is most comfortable for you.

Walk-in Shower Enclosures

walk-in shower enclosuresChoose from a crescent or curved shower rod and a decorative shower curtain or a glass shower enclosure. Shower doors come in a variety of finishes and glass patterns. Finishes include silver, brushed nickel, polished nickel, oil rubbed bronze, black, white, and biscuit. Glass patterns include clear, obscure, hammered, antique, and rain.

Shower door enclosures are available in framed, semi-frameless, and frameless styles. Frame refers to the metal around the glass and the metal used to support the glass.

Walk-in Shower Accessories

Personalize your walk in shower with convenient accessories such as a shower tower with enough shelves for all your soaps and shampoos and personal grooming supplies. A separate control can be added to a handheld shower for convenient control while seated. Add body sprays for the ultimate shower experience.
